Part three details the converging stories of two churches—one bent on covering up and hiding their failures to love well, and the other willing to admit their failures, repent, and seek renewal. I share this part of our story because it illustrates two potential paths forward for the American Church—one path seeks to build Christ’s kingdom and follow our Good Shepherd into the messiness of life while trusting his voice to lead us through. The other path seeks to build an earthly kingdom and follow human voices into destruction and darkness. Scripture is clear that these are the only two paths before us. There is no third way. Like Joshua said as he prepared to enter the promised land and conquer his enemies, “Choose you this day whom you will serve, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” The question for every church member and leader is this: Which path will you choose to follow? Whom will you choose to serve?
